The Arctic Apple® has been genetically engineered to prevent oxidation, or browning once cut into. This apple has been awaiting USDA approval since May of 2012. The initial comment period ended in September of last year and plans were for a second and final comment period to open in the spring of 2013; however, the comment period has been opened and will close on Monday, Dec. 16th.
Scientists and professors around the world are sharing much concern. The technology used involves silencing the gene that causes apples to brown – also known as dsRNA technology. A major caution is that the dsRNA of the apple will enter the bloodstream and cells of consumers. Scientists and professors are recommending research be on the safety of the GMO apple before it’s approved for human consumption.
